Here's a simple tip that will help improve your home security.
Did you know that most garage doors can be easily opened using a wire coat hanger? Most people consider their car is safe once the garage roller door is closed but, unless your door has the integrated locking solenoids, a simple wire coat hanger can defeat your security.
Garage doors have a safety cord that will disconnect the door from the gate mechanism allowing the gate to be opened manually in the event of power failure. This is an important safety feature if you need an emergency exit via the garage in the case of fire, for instance, and the power supply has tripped.
Potential thieves can take advantage of this safety feature to gain access to your garage and home if the internal garage door is unlocked, and all they need to achieve this is a coat hanger! By sliding the wire hook through the gap between the top of the roller door and the house frame, they can hook the release cord and pull it through the gap and then pull to disengage the mechanism. They can then lift the door and gain access.
The good news is that you can significantly reduce the possibility of that occurring by wrapping the release cord tightly around the connecting rod, making sure that you are still able to reach the cord and unwrap in case you ever need to use it. To keep the cord in place you can use adhesive tape or a kitchen twist-tie.
Most of these crimes are opportunistic. By taking this simple step, you may avoid becoming another statistic.
Such a simple but valuable tip! Within minutes of reading this I did as suggested. Thank you.
very handy tip. We also have a door between garage and house but it locks automatically and needs a security code to open. Plus of course motion activated cameras outside. As so many of us have, teens have tried to enter the garage but gave up and went elsewhere in the street.
