You may have noticed that the current water levels in the canal are lower than expected. We have escalated our concerns to the Council who have responded promptly.
After raising the issue on Wednesday, the Council checked and confirmed that the pumping station is operating correctly.
The initial theory was that water volume may have been lost during the reinstating of the lock at the completion of stage 1 of the renewal project. We would expect that any loss of volume during the works would be gradually replenished during the nightly pumping of water into the canal.
However, continued monitoring overnight identified that the water level continued to drop.
In consultation with the Council engineers, it was decided to switch the pump on continuously for the next 24 hours. Pumping commenced at around 11am today. This action should see the water level rise by up to 9cm.
I can confirm that the pump is working and water is flowing into the canal system.
Things to note:
These actions will not necessarily resolve the situation, but will help the engineers form a clearer view of the issue.
The continuous pumping for 24 hours will not create a risk of water going over the revetment wall. Any surplus water will flow over the weir.
We will be closely monitoring the situation and providing feedback as more information comes to hand.
Kind regards,
Neale Bertram
President
